Kids Bicycle Size Guide UAE | Mogoo & More

Buying a bike that's the wrong size is one of the most common — and most avoidable — mistakes parents make. Too small, and your child outgrows it in a few months. Too big, and it's genuinely unsafe — they can't reach the pedals properly, can't brake in control, and are far more likely to tip over. Getting the size right the first time makes riding safer and a lot more fun.

Here's how to size a kids' bike correctly, using MYTS Store's bike and bicycle range as a reference, plus a few UAE-specific things worth knowing before you buy.

Kids Bicycle Size Chart: Age & Height Guide

Wheel size — not age — is the real measurement that matters, but age gives a useful starting point. Always confirm with the standover height test below before deciding.

Treat this as a starting range, not a hard rule. A taller 9-year-old might be ready for a 26" wheel a year or two early, while a smaller 11-year-old may still be most comfortable on a 24". The standover height test below is the most reliable way to confirm fit.

The Standover Height Test (Most Reliable Method)

  1. Have your child stand over the bike frame with both feet flat on the ground.

  2. There should be 2–5cm of clearance between them and the top tube (the horizontal bar of the frame).

  3. Sitting on the saddle, they should be able to reach the handlebars comfortably without stretching, and place at least the balls of their feet on the ground for stability.

If there's no clearance when standing over the frame, the bike is too big — regardless of what the age label says.

Balance Bikes & Trikes vs. Training Wheels

This is one of the more debated choices among parents, and both approaches work — the right one depends on your child's age and coordination.

Balance bikes — pedal-less bikes for the youngest riders — teach balance first, which many children pick up faster than pedalling with stabilisers. MYTS Store's Kinderkraft range includes several balance bike options (Runner, Fly Plus, Goswift, 2Waynext) that let kids transition straight to a pedal bike without ever needing training wheels.

Tricycles are the other common starting point for younger toddlers who aren't quite ready to balance on two wheels — MYTS Store carries Radio Flyer and Kinderkraft trike options for this stage.

Training wheels suit kids who are already confident walkers and runners but haven't developed two-wheel balance yet — most standard pedal bikes in the Mogoo range can be fitted with them if needed.

If your child is between 2 and 4, a balance bike or trike is generally the easier starting point. From around 5–6 onward, most kids move straight to a 20"–24" pedal bike like the Mogoo Journey or Fusion.

UAE Riding Safety Tips

  • Ride in the cooler hours. Morning and early evening are far more comfortable than midday, especially from May through September.

  • Choose shaded or covered routes where possible — community parks with tree cover or covered cycling tracks are easier on kids than open asphalt paths in direct sun.

  • Keep hydration on hand for any ride longer than 10–15 minutes.

  • Check tyre pressure and pavement heat before longer summer rides — hot asphalt can affect both.

  • Always use a properly fitted helmet, regardless of how short the ride is.

  • Stick to designated cycling areas or quiet residential streets rather than main roads, especially for younger or less experienced riders.
